When I published my predictions for the year, I called the rise of the Forward Deployed Engineer as one of the trends to watch. I underestimated it.

Forward Deployed Engineer job postings rose by more than 800% between January and September 2025. Salesforce has publicly committed to hiring 1,000 Forward Deployed Engineers. OpenAI, Anthropic, Palantir, Databricks, Cohere, Ramp, Rippling and Intercom are all building dedicated Forward Deployed Engineer functions. In April 2026, EY launched a UK & Ireland Forward Deployed Engineer practice, the first major consultancy to formally adopt the model. OpenAI raised more money and framed the OpenAI Deployment Company and then acquired our friends at Tomoro. This means they now have 150 FDEs.

This is not a job title fad. It is the enterprise software industry quietly admitting that the old delivery model is broken.

This guide covers everything an enterprise leader needs to know about the Forward Deployed Engineer: what the role is, why it exists, the skills that define it, why the talent is so scarce, why you cannot find them by searching the job title, what it costs, and the smartest way to bring that capability into your organisation without a nine-month hiring cycle.

What Is a Forward Deployed Engineer?

The Forward Deployed Engineer was pioneered at Palantir in the early 2010s, where they were called “Deltas.” Until 2016, Palantir had more Deltas than software engineers. The premise was simple. Palantir’s own job descriptions describe Forward Deployed Engineer responsibilities as “looking similar to those of a startup CTO.” That framing is deliberate as the role is built for high-ownership operators who thrive in ambiguity, not implementation-checklist managers.

Why the Forward Deployed Engineer Role Has Exploded

Three forces have collided to make the Forward Deployed Engineer the hottest role in enterprise technology.

Here is the single most important thing in this guide, and the mistake almost every hiring manager makes first.

Searching LinkedIn for “Forward Deployed Engineer” is the fastest way to miss the best ones.

Palantir invented the title in 2011 by rebranding solutions and integration engineers to give the role prestige. The work existed long before the words did. As a result, most of the people who can genuinely do this job today do not call themselves a Forward Deployed Engineer at all. Filter your search by that job title and you will undercount the real talent pool by an order of magnitude.

The people you actually want are hiding under titles like:

  • Solutions Engineer and Senior Solutions Engineer
  • Solutions Architect (when customer-embedded, not pre-sales only)
  • Deployment Strategist
  • Integration Engineer
  • Implementation Engineer and Implementation Consultant
  • Customer Engineer and Customer Solutions Engineer
  • Technical Account Manager (the engineering-led variant)
  • Sales Engineer (the senior end of the role overlaps heavily)
  • Agent Engineer (the newest variant, used at AI labs for agentic deployments)
  • Systems Integration Engineer and Technical Consultant (the pre-2011 titles, still in use)

Ex-Palantir, ex-OpenAI, ex-Databricks and ex-Snowflake engineers are very often Forward Deployed Engineers under a different label. The work history tells you far more than the words on the profile.

So if the job title is unreliable, what do you search on? The answer is skills.

How to Identify a Forward Deployed Engineer: Hire on Skills, Not Labels (the SFIA 9 Framework)

  2. Systems integration and build (SINT) — Level 5. The hard part of the job: integrating a new platform with the customer’s legacy ETL, single sign-on, data warehouse and regulated security stack.
  3. Machine learning (MLNG) and Data engineering (DENG) — Level 4/5. Practical AI literacy — LLM orchestration, RAG, evals, agent frameworks, vector stores — and real-world data engineering with Snowflake, Databricks or Salesforce Data Cloud.
  4. Infrastructure design (IFDN) and Deployment (DEPL) — Level 4/5. Cloud platform depth across AWS, Azure or GCP, including IAM, networking and data services, and the ability to own a production deployment from sandbox to go-live.
  5. Software design (SWDN) and Solution architecture (ARCH) — Level 5. Full-stack engineering and the ability to architect end-to-end inside a customer’s existing landscape.
  6. Problem management (PBMG) — Level 5. The ability to read an unfamiliar codebase, diagnose a production issue, and ship a patch against it inside a week.

The commercial core (where most candidates fail)

  1. Requirements definition and management (REQM) — Level 5. Turns an ambiguous business problem into a shippable spec without twenty discovery meetings. This is the single skill that most distinguishes a great Forward Deployed Engineer from a merely strong product engineer.
  2. Stakeholder relationship management (RLMT) — Level 5. Holds a room of nervous client engineers (who feel threatened by a vendor this deep in their stack) and impatient client VPs (who want unrealistic timelines) at the same time, and manages both through the deployment.
  3. Consultancy (CNSL) — Level 5/6. Will disagree with the customer to their face, and with their own product team to theirs, holding a defensible position based on evidence.
  4. Specialist advice (TECH) and Communication — Level 5. Executive presence and written communication that survives scrutiny by a CIO or CDAO.

The Venn diagram of a strong production engineer at PROG Level 5 and a real operator at RLMT and CNSL Level 5 is genuinely tiny. That intersection is the role. The job title is just noise.

The result is a structural shortage that will not resolve in the five-year window during which enterprises most need the capability.

What a Forward Deployed Engineer Costs

Levels.fyi data current to early 2026 puts average total compensation for a Forward Deployed Engineer in the US at around $238,000, with the typical range $205,000–$486,000 and Staff-level Forward Deployed Engineers clearing $630,000+. Palantir, OpenAI and Anthropic sit at the top of the band. The premium exists for one reason: skill scarcity. You are paying for an engineer who can also manage a multi-million-dollar relationship.

In the UK the bands are narrower but the trajectory is identical. Levels.fyi puts the UK median at £121,000. Palantir’s London Forward Deployed Engineer function sits in the £155,000–£195,000 base band at senior levels, with significant equity on top.

EY’s launch will accelerate the pricing reset across UK consultancies, because they now have to compete with AI labs and Palantir for the same shortlist. Expect Big Four Forward Deployed Engineer base salaries to clear £130,000 by the end of 2026, with Tier 2 system integrators forced to follow within 12 months.

The headline for any enterprise leader: a permanent Forward Deployed Engineer is expensive, slow to hire, and a flight risk the moment a competitor or AI lab comes calling.

Who Is Hiring Forward Deployed Engineers

Three distinct hiring patterns have emerged.
